What Is the Value of an MBA?

After completing an undergraduate degree and working in the corporate world for a few years, you may start to consider your options for career advancement. One option is to continue your education. There are many questions to ask when researching the benefits of an advanced degree. You must determine whether the time, money and effort will be worth it. Those interested in an MBA program must ask themselves an important question: What is the value of an MBA?

MBA graduates are in high demand

MBAs Are in Demand

Of course, there are many different answers to this question, and employment data varies from state to state, region to region, but recent reports from the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) show that MBA graduates are generally in high demand. Starting salaries approach six figures, and with signing and guaranteed bonuses, that number can go even higher. These same reports indicate that the MBA employment rate is nearly 100 percent.

As interest in the technology and healthcare sectors grows, MBA graduates will continue to see a need for their skill sets. Many companies in these sectors are even offering program graduates mid-level positions instead of entry-level. For those who already have relevant work experience, lucrative positions become even more attainable.

MBAs for Entrepreneurs

What about MBAs who end up working for themselves? These reports show that nine out of ten entrepreneurs are satisfied working for themselves, and nearly as many report that their advanced degrees afforded them the skills and knowledge they needed to build their own successful businesses. Nearly three-quarters of those businesses report having two or more employees, and a similar percentage are looking to hire three new employees over the next year. Creating new jobs is an added value of an MBA.

Plan Ahead

As you look to your future goals, consider the benefits of continuing your education. Patience and dedication to your education can give you a return on the investment. Additional degrees improve MBAs’ job placement — many go on to excel in the field thanks to enhanced qualitative skills, broader knowledge of technology advancements and modern management techniques, and proper leadership training.

Even if you have decided that an MBA is right for you, you may still have concerns about balancing work while pursuing a degree. However, many schools, including Southeastern Oklahoma State University, now offer their MBA degrees online. An online MBA program offers flexibility and affordability, and may be the right answer for working professionals who want to earn an advanced degree.
