Alternative Certification Admissions
- A person with a bachelor's degree seeking alternative certification must apply and pay the fee to the Oklahoma Department of Education (DOE) for admission to the alternative certification. The teacher certification section of the state department processes the application and then sends out the letter providing the applicant with instructions for completing their alternative certification. These instructions include timelines, courses and hours required, and certification tests. Hours required vary depending on student's undergrad and can range from a minimum of nine to a maximum of 18 credit hours.
- According to the state department, applications are turned around within 24 hours during the school year. This means most candidates will receive their letters within a few days of submitting their applications. In the summer, right after new bachelor's degrees are conferred, the process can take up to eight weeks due to the number of applications received.
- Alternative certification candidates receive their letters via the mail.
- Even if the student only needs 9 credit hours per the DOE, he/she must still apply for the M.Ed. C&I - General program.
- Alternative certification candidates must finish their coursework and pass the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET) and the Oklahoma Subject Area Test(s)(OSAT) before receiving their provisional certification. They may then begin teaching and will have three years to pass their Oklahoma Professional Teaching Exam (OPTE). Failure to pass the OPTE will prevent the candidate from getting a regular teaching license.
