Joshua Rojo is eager to bring the thunder in the workforce.

The Oklahoma City native is on track to graduate from the online Bachelor of Business Administration in Management program at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in May 2021.

“I have been in college since I graduated from homeschool,” he said. “The bachelor’s degree was the plan all along.”

Rojo is a full-time student who transferred to Southeastern after earning an associate degree at Rose State College two years ago. He also does volunteer work at a local church in his free time.

“I love the online format,” he said. “When I was at Rose State College, I did all in-person classes except for one online class,” he said. “It constantly kept me busy.

“The fully online format was a system shock the first semester, but once you learn how to manage your homework assignments, it’s pretty easy going. I wake up late, do homework, go out and then come home and do more homework. It’s flexible.”

Deciding Factors

Except for the two years that he lived at Edwards Air Force Base near Los Angeles, California, Rojo has spent his life in Oklahoma City, where he also attended junior college for free.

“They have a program that pays for the degree if you do volunteer programs through the school,” he said. “All I had to do was pay for my textbooks. I volunteered at the newspaper for them, which was a lot of fun.”

Rojo researched several universities in his home state before opting to enroll at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 2019.

“I didn’t know where I was headed after the first two years, so I was figuring that out,” he said. “I looked at the University of Oklahoma and OKC University, but I found Southeastern to be the best choice because of the cost, the fact that it was all online and that it is accredited.

“I also heard a lot of good reviews for Southeastern. My dad worked with a lot of people who got their degree from there and said they loved it.”

So far, Small Business Management is Rojo’s favorite course in the online BBA in Management program curriculum.

“They walk you through a business plan in that course,” he said. “It was cool seeing our ideas come to fruition, and then to tie it together with research.”

Rojo does not have a specific career path in mind once he graduates, but he looks forward to entering the workforce with a quality education under his belt.

“I want to make sure I go somewhere I can put my management experience to use and make a bit of difference where I am learning and growing,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot about government internships, so that’s an option. I am pretty flexible. I’ll go wherever the wind takes me.”

Game Plan

If Southeastern has an in-person commencement ceremony, Rojo hopes to celebrate his higher education experience by attending. He has had strong support from his family throughout his time in college.

“I got great value out of the Bachelor of Business Administration in Management program,” he said. “I would love to walk at graduation. My family is excited for me to be finished. They’ve been dealing with me for the past four years.”

Rojo’s tip for success in the online BBA program is as simple as scheduling and keeping track of one’s homework. Wherever he ends up for the next chapter of his life, he believes he will be ready to meet any challenge head on.

He is an avid basketball fan who follows the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder team. He also likes the Phoenix Suns because his dad was born in Arizona. Yet, he is happy he chose to complete his higher education journey as a member of the Savage Storm.

“I have learned so much in the program,” he said. “I am sure that I will be able to find a job almost anywhere. I love this degree.”
