Which classes do you teach online?

Special Topics in Entrepreneurship and Opportunity and New Product Development, but I mainly teach undergraduate courses.

Why did you start teaching?

A year after receiving my master's degree in business at SE, I was contacted by my former advisor. He asked me if I would teach Introduction to Business that spring (1988). I had never considered a teaching career, but I was planning to come back to school to take more accounting courses, so I thought I would give the adjunct job a try. I discovered that I really liked teaching. I taught a course that summer and was hired on full-time starting that fall.

What's the best advice that you have ever received?

My mother always encouraged me to go after my dreams and to expect to have to work hard to get there. She taught me that there is a lot more satisfaction in knowing I had truly earned something, and it was not just handed to me.

What qualities make someone particularly successful in the profession in which you teach?

• You need to have a passion for what you teach.
• You need to enjoy working with students.
• You need to stay current in your field.
• You need to experiment with new teaching/learning techniques and strategies.

What's the best advice that you could give your students?

Keep learning! The diploma is not the end of "school".

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

Besides the Bible, I don't have a specific book. There are too many good ones out there.

Tell us something that your students might find interesting, something they may not know about you.

I live on a 150-acre farm and am actively engaged in equine rescue and serve as a foster home primarily for rescued miniature horses. I am a certified equine cruelty investigator.

I also drove an 18-wheeler for several years for Kraft Foods when I was in my 20s. Yeah, weird.
