Key steps for admission to your online community health master’s program

Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s online M.S. in Community Health program has specific requirements that applicants must meet to enroll. Please read the admission guidelines to ensure you qualify.

To meet the admission requirements for the M.S. in Community Health online program, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field from a regionally accredited university with a minimum 2.50 overall GPA or minimum 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of courses AND current CV/Resume, that must be reviewed and approved by program faculty, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field from a regionally accredited university and at least six hours in a graduate program from a regionally accredited university with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in good standing at the previous university AND current CV/Resume, that must be reviewed and approved by program faculty, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited university with a minimum 2.50 overall GPA AND current CV/Resume AND a Letter of Intent AND two letters of recommendation, that must be reviewed and approved by program faculty. The Letter of Intent must address the following questions:
    • What are your academic goals?
    • How will earning this degree help you reach your professional goals?
    • How will you balance work and your online program?
    • What is your motivation for earning your M.S. in Community Health?
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited university and at least six hours in a graduate program from a regionally accredited university with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in good standing at the previous university AND current CV/Resume AND a Letter of Intent AND two letters of recommendation that will be submitted to the program coordinator for consideration. The Letter of Intent must address the following questions:

  • No GRE is required for Southeastern Oklahoma State University online M.S. in Community Health program
  • There is a non-refundable $30 application fee for both domestic and international students
  • The M.S. in Community Health degree online at SE allows a maximum of nine credit hours that can be transferred from another program with approval from the program coordinator.

    International Application and Admission Requirements: Please note, unfortunately, students with an F-1 visa are ineligible for online programs.

    2. Academic Records:
      • Original final post-secondary transcript(s) from each college or university attended within the United States.
      • Post-secondary records from outside the U.S. must be course-by-course analyzed by a NACES (www.NACES.org) educational credential evaluation service such as IERF or WES or ECE.
    3. English Proficiency: Internet-based TOEFL score of 79 or an IELTS Academic score of 6.5; taken within 2 years of enrollment.
      • For TOEFL, have your score report sent to Southeastern (institution code: 6657).
      • For IELTS, let us know your TRF number.
      • You do not need TOEFL or IELTS scores if you meet one of the following:
        • English is your first language from a country whose official language is English
        • You have a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university
        • You have a bachelor’s degree from an English speaking country

    For the online community health degree, you will complete a total of 11 courses equaling 33 credit hours.

    This course will introduce basic concepts of community health science and contemporary approaches to health promotion. Students will assess various aspects of community health including stakeholders, ethical issues, and social and community structures. Students will also assess the various definitions of health and illness, and the correlation of health and illness behavior.

    This course provides an overview of health behavior theories. Students will examine how health behavior theories are used to guide health promotion and education to influence healthy behaviors in at risk populations.

    This course examines health disparities and their consequences on healthcare. Students will assess social determinates of health such as socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, and gender. Emphasis will be placed on how these determinates affect health outcomes.

    This course assesses skills and tools necessary to educate the community. Students will examine the historical and modern roles of health promotion and education. Students will learn how to conduct a needs assessment of the community using evidence-based techniques, frameworks, and philosophical models.

    This course provides students with an understanding of research, its processes, and how monies may be received for research in the health sciences through grant writing. The language of grants, proposal development, funding sources, and budget justification will also be explored.

    This course is designed to study descriptive and inferential biostatistical concepts with an emphasis on practical application. This course will further understanding of univariate, bivariate, and multivariate quantitative statistical methods utilized in the hypothesis testing process, as well as, statistical relevance to understanding reliability and validity measures, key epidemiological concepts, and meta-analysis reports to discover the best evidence for practice in the healthcare environment.

    This course prepares students to investigate health problems and health hazards in the community. Students will utilize their knowledge and understanding of community health, health determinants, health behavior, and health promotion in the development of a health prevention program and present to their capstone class.

    This course will examine the relationship of epidemiology and public health. The students will learn the epidemiological terms and how to calculate the epidemiological values. The students will learn how to analyze data and interpret the results.

    This course explores an overview of health policy and law, discusses essential issues in health policy, and law and reviews basic skills in health policy analysis. Topics covered include policy and the policy making process, law and the legal system, individual rights, insurance, government health insurance programs, health reform, policy analysis and policy advocacy.

    This course, utilizing both communication and media theory, provides instruction on the goals and strategies of health care promotion and the social structures within the context of health maintenance and health promotion. Students will learn to develop preventative and maintenance healthcare messages, select appropriate media channels, and communicate with difficult-to-reach audiences.

    This course focuses on the practical leadership and management skills required for working in complex healthcare environments. An overview of leadership theories, styles, competence, applications, and responsibilities and other topics are covered.
