To meet the admission requirements for the M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction – Reading online program, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA or minimum 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of courses, or
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university with a minimum 2.0 overall GPA AND a packet consisting of a current resume, one professional letter of recommendation, and letter of application which outlines the applicant's career goals and objectives (including how an M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction – English will enhance their career) that must be reviewed and approved by program faculty, or
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university and at least 6 hours in a graduate program from a regionally accredited university with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and must be in good standing at previous university
- No GRE is required for Southeastern Oklahoma State University online M.Ed. programs
International Application and Admissions Requirements: Please note, unfortunately, students with an F-1 visa are ineligible for online programs.
- Complete the application. There is a non-refundable $65 application fee.
- Academic Records:
- Original final post-secondary transcript(s) from each college or university attended within the United States.
- Post-secondary records from outside the U.S. must be course-by-course analyzed by a NACES (www.NACES.org) educational credential evaluation service such as IERF or WES or ECE.
- English Proficiency: Internet-based TOEFL score of 79 or an IELTS Academic score of 6.5; taken within 2 years of enrollment.
- For TOEFL, have your score report sent to Southeastern (institution code: 6657).
- For IELTS, let us know your TRF number.
- You do not need TOEFL or IELTS scores if you meet one of the following:
- English is your first language from a country whose official language is English
- You have a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university
- You have a bachelor’s degree from an English speaking country

EDUC 5203: Introduction to Education Research

A study of research methodology and literature related to solving educational problems and improving the learning process.
EDUC 5103: History and Philosophy of Education
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Educators will explore, critically appraise, and apply the historical and philosophical foundations of education to their professional practice. Attention will be given to such topics as the purposes of education, professional ethics, technology and education, and diversity in schooling and society.
EDUC 5153: Teaching Strategies
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
An investigation of contemporary problems of classroom instruction and related educational and social concerns. Additional strategies for coping with these problems are examined.
EDUC 5183: Learning in Culturally Responsive Learner Environments

Theoretical and practical foundations to empower visionary leaders with the required innovative, culturally responsive knowledge/skills required to thrive in a variety of socio-economically and/or geographically diverse organizations, such as: K-12 schools, for and/or non-profit organizations, universities, libraries and museums.

EDUC 5313: Introduction to Learning Technologies

This course will empower students with the theoretical and practical foundation to create and support innovative, transformational learning environments that are infused with technology.
ELED 5013: Foundations & Survey of Reading at the Advanced Level
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
This course focuses on the foundations of reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, word recognition and comprehension. Efferent and aesthetic reading and assessment are addressed.
ELED 5643: Literacy Materials and Environments
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
This course focuses on characteristics of appropriate literacy materials and environments, the effect of literacy materials and environments on learning to read and write, development of effective reading and writing strategies, and enhancement of the desire to read and write.
ELED 5653: Content Area Reading
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
This course focuses on reading in the content areas of the curriculum. Interdisciplinary planning, inquiry learning, content-area strategies, vocabulary and critical thinking are addressed.
ESL 5303: ESL Methods, Materials and Assessments
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
This course focuses on English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum development and instruction for students (Preschool thru grade 12) in a variety of language and program settings. The course emphasizes ESL materials selection, ESL instruction, literacy and content-area instruction (L1 and ESL), and sheltered English instruction (SIOP – Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol). Topics related to ESL for ELLs are reviewed. This course is designed to meet TESOL/CAEP standards and help prepare students for the Oklahoma ESL Subject Area Test.
