Which classes do you teach online?

Entrepreneurship & New Venture Management and Marketing New Ventures

Why did you start teaching?

I was always interested in teaching, though I thought I would be teaching History. As our lives often do, I instead went to work in a large corporation and found that I enjoyed corporate management. As I was finishing my MBA degree, the MBA Director suggested I would make a good teacher. I started teaching as an adjunct instructor at a local community college and began my transition to become a university professor!

What's the best advice that you have ever received?

"Never, never, never give up!"--Sir Winston Churchill

What's the best advice that you could give your students?

Being an entrepreneur is a challenge every day, but it affords you independence and control over your work. Although few entrepreneurs become rich, many enjoy the challenge and opportunity to create something of value. Successful entrepreneurs do not have to be able to invent some new technology, but instead be able to recognize opportunity, conduct research, and prepare a detailed plan that will help their business to succeed. At that point, the entrepreneur must take a step in faith that they have exploited a good market opportunity and can be successful in that business.

What qualities make someone particularly successful in the profession in which you teach?

Successful entrepreneurs must:

  1. Have a broad range of business knowledge
  2. Have a constant need to learn more
  3. Have a desire to succeed but can deal with failure
  4. Be confident, motivated, and optimistic
  5. Be a calculated risk-taker (not a gambler!)
  6. Be passionate about their business
  7. Really like people, including customers, employees, and all you come in contact with

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

The Bible. How you conduct all aspects of your business should be based on a sound moral foundation.

What do you think is the biggest challenge that entrepreneurs face today?

Lack of key business management skills and failing to get help in time to save the business.

Tell us something that your students might find interesting, something they may not know about you.

Although my corporate experience was with one of the largest Fortune 500 companies, I have always been interested in small business/entrepreneurship and as a kid I always had some little business to earn money. My mission is to help increase the success rate of small businesses (currently, half fail within 5 years of start-up) to help build the economy and create jobs.
